About the Service
Temporary foreign workers in Canada can remain in the country if they submit an application under an eligible permanent residence (PR) program before their current status expires. Workers can make this transition through programs such as the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, the Canadian Experience Class, Provincial Nominee Programs, or pilot programs. Programs are also available in Quebec.
Employers can also support applications by providing a valid job offer that meets the program requirements. In many cases, applicants may obtain a work permit linked to their PR application, such as a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP), which allows them to continue working while Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) processes their PR application.
This ensures continuity of employment and legal status in Canada. Workers must meet the eligibility criteria, including skilled work experience, adequate language proficiency, and admissibility.
Applying in advance helps avoid interruptions in status and supports a smoother transition from temporary status to permanent residence.
